The Salento Light Ritual: A New Symbolic Ceremony for a Personalised Wedding

Inspired by the land of Salento, here is a new symbolic ritual created specially for couples who choose to come to Puglia to get married.

Celebrant-led Ceremonies are an increasingly popular choice for couples who want to make their wedding truly personal and unique.

As celebrants, we meet the couples who entrust us with the honour of crafting, writing and officiating their ceremony so we can get to know them better and suggest a ritual that best reflects their story, their character, and their values.

We offer time-honoured, romantic, or playful rituals that come with rich histories—classics include handfasting, unity candles, jumping of the broom, or ring warming—or we use our creativity to design tailor-made rituals inspired by the couple or by particularly meaningful places.

This is how the Salento Light Ritual was born—a symbolic ceremony rooted in the heart of Salento, among centuries-old olive trees and ancient traditions. A ritual that honours love in every way.

According to an ancient legend, every human being gives off light that rises to the sky. When two people come together, their lights merge into a single glow that will illuminate the universe. It is from this evocative image that the Salento Light Ritual takes its inspiration—a ritual designed to symbolically unite two hearts on their wedding day.

Symbols: elements of the ritual

During the ceremony, the celebrant welcomes the couple with words that reflect the beauty and history of the Puglia region, for example:

“Tina and Ludovico (fictional names), today we’re celebrating your wedding in the heart of Salento, a land where history and beauty intertwine like the branches of ancient olive trees. We are gathered here to honour the love, strength, and prosperity of your marriage.”

The celebrant’s words, of course, will be tailored to the couple’s unique love story and their values.

The three protagonists of the symbolic ritual

  • Pumo
This handcrafted ceramic piece represents a budding acanthus flower, an ancient Apulian symbol that captures the spirit of this land. The name pumo comes from the Latin pomum, meaning fruit, and is linked to the goddess Pomona—an ancient Etruscan and Roman deity, protector of fruit, and symbol of fertility and prosperity. In the past, pumi were placed on balconies, cornices, or doorsteps as a good omen for the family that lived there. Like a bud ready to bloom, the pumo represents rebirth, good fortune, and prosperity. Just as a flower in bloom grows and opens, so too is the love of the couple destined to flourish and thrive.

  • Oil
A distillation of history and culture, olive oil is foundational to Apulian identity. Salento’s oil symbolizes abundance, nourishment, and richness. The cultivation of olive trees and the production of extra virgin olive oil date back as far as the 7th century BC, likely introduced by the Phoenicians. This “liquid gold” nourishes not only the body but also the soul: it symbolises care, protection, and the tenderness of a shared life.

  • Light
That special southern light, which dances through olive branches and reflects off the ancient stone of the ancient masserie (farmhouses), is a unique feature of this land. It stands for hope, clarity, and direction. This light illuminates the couple’s journey into a shared future.

The crucial moment: when the elements come together

At the central moment of the ceremony, the couple pours oil into the pumo and lights the wick with a torch.
As they do so, they can say something like:

“May the pumo give us strength,
the oil abundance,
and the light of Salento illuminate our love forever.”

Why choose this ritual?

This ritual can be included in a celebrant-led ceremony or in a civil ceremony. It offers couples a chance to create a deeply intimate moment, also deeply rooted in the land.

It’s a perfect addition for those who, though living abroad, have roots in Italy—particularly in the beautiful Puglia region—and have chosen to return to Salento to celebrate their wedding. It is a ceremony that not only tells your love story and wishes you happiness but also marks a return to your roots, dissolving borders and honouring both you and the land your family comes from.

It’s also ideal for those who simply love Salento, those who seek authenticity, and those who want a ceremony that truly tells their story.

If you’re seeking a unique, poetic, and meaningful ritual, the Salento Light Ritual might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
